Vafa Shayani, MD
Dr. Vafa Shayani received his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and attended medical school at George Washington University School of Medicine. He completed his internship and general surgical residency at George Washington University and after an additional year of concentrated training in advanced laparoscopy, started his first professional appointment at Loyola University Medical Center in 1996.
Dr. Shayani is one of leading Lap-Band surgeons in the country. He started performing gastric banding soon after its FDA approval in 2001, making him one of the first surgeons in the United States to perform this procedure. He is a Proctor for the device manufacturer, wherein he trains and qualifies other surgeons in LAP BAND surgery.
Dr. Shayani’s achievements in academic surgery are evident by the numerous articles published in peer reviewed journals, book chapters and his presentations at national and international meetings.
Dr. Shayani is a board certified general surgeon and holds a number of society memberships including the American College of Surgeons, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.
Dr. Shayani and his wife currently reside in Hinsdale with their two children.
